Obviously your local Chambers Of Commerce or Business Networking meetings can be a source of great prospects for your online marketing services.
Just turning up and talking casually to the business owners there can be enough to get you work.
Later I tell you in detail how to speak to business owners.
But there is a far more powerful way to get eager prospects lining up to hire you instead of just attending a business networking meeting offer to be a speaker.
Depending on the size of your city and surrounding area you might have rotary groups, women’s business groups, chambers of commerce, Business Networking International groups; the list goes on and on.
And many of these groups find it desperately difficult to find speakers who’ll speak on subjects their members really want to hear about.
But most are thrilled to learn a little bit more on “making more money from that interweb thing”.
Just call up the group’s organizer and offer to speak about say: “The 7 Biggest Secrets to Making Money with Your Business from the Internet” or “7 Fatal Online Marketing Mistakes That Can KILL Your Business”
Mistake number 1 might be “not having a website at all.”
Mistake number 2 “not having an autoresponder”.
This is really basic stuff for you but pure revelation for the average offline business owner.
If you do a halfway decent job you’ll be seen as the prophet of online profits.
Let me give you a couple of secrets to get people flocking to you at the end of your talk.
- Right at the start of your talk look at your watch and say something like “I’m going to try to pack what should really take me at least 2 weeks into XX minutes tonight…which is impossible…so when you have unanswered questions, as you will, feel free to come up and speak to me after the talk.”
- Base your talk around key principles and make each principle interesting by telling a story or case study related to it. Stories of you working successfully with clients are the best kind, followed by your own successes online.
- Mention that you help clients improve their website marketing and that you’re very busy but you occasionally take on new clients.
You want to plant the seed in the minds of your audience that they might be able to hire you if they approach you right and offer enough money. But avoid coming across as trying to sell your service from the stage.
In these kinds of meetings that are generally unnecessary and you’ll probably make more sales being low key, giving the general impression that you’re not at all desperate for work. (Which you’re not. Remember you can get work walking down the street in your local business sector.)
- When people come up to ask you questions after the talk start asking questions about their business and hone in on how you might be able to help them.
Give your best ideas freely. This will build confidence and trust and establish you as a true expert.
And again talk about as many stories and case studies as possible.
- Before you go to a business meeting be sure to have some business cards ready. One key point you may want to consider. Fancy business names on your business card are great but if you’re going to be banking checks in your personal bank account you’ll probably want to feature your name rather than a business name on your business card.
Otherwise the business owners you deal with might be wary of writing a check out to your name.
For the same reason if you’re going to be banking checks in a particular business account the business name on your card should probably match the business name on your bank account.
Next we’ll talk about how to get as much business as you want whenever you want…
