So if the business you’re creating a website for is running dog obedience training courses in Grand Junction you’ll probably want to be at the top of Google and Yahoo search engines for that search term and other related search terms.
Here’s the biggest secret. It’s far easier to get ranked in the top 3 in Google for a whole pile of really long, really specific keyword phrases that suggest your prospects are ready to buy than it is to get ranked for one really short keyword phrase where you’re not quite sure what your prospect wants.
“Dog” for example would be kind of stupid to optimize for. It would be time consuming to get any results and even if you did you probably wouldn’t get any significant paying traffic.
“Grand Junction Dogs” on the other hand might be really cool to optimize for and fairly easy to reach the top of the rankings on Google and Yahoo. Here are some guidelines for doing it.
- 1. If you’re starting a website from scratch pick a catchy domain name that’s based on a keyword phrase you’d like to be number one on Google for.
- 2. If you were determined to get to the top of google for “Grand Junction Dog” related searches GrandJuctionDog.com might be a good domain name to consider. This is what we call a “root” domain name because it is the root of many much longer keyword phrases like “grand junction dog obedience classes” and “grand junction dog training” Google seems to like .com .org and .gov domain names based on a keyword phrase and tends to rank them higher.
- 3. For each keyword phrase create one unique page on your website. It’s easier to do this with blogs but not too difficult if you have a template for a regular site.
4. Your page title is crucial. The page title is the words that appear right at the top of your internet browser. You want your page title to match your longtail keyword phrase as closely as possible.
