A logo is a visual representation of a brand or a company. In many cases, logo is the only symbol that customers remembers about the company (think Nike or Coca Cola and say what all you know about it), that is why creating a meaningful logo that conveys the message has to be organization’s top concern. And we cannot create a great logo until we know what makes a logo great. In this article, I will talk about the elements of logo that make it great.
Visual element
Visual element (s) is the most prominent part of any logo. It attracts viewers’ attention, and distinct and non-complex visual element of a logo cements the name of the company or the brand in the mind of the viewer. The visual element should be simple and non-complex, which could be decoded by 4th or 5th grader because the amount of time your customers have for your logo is comparable to the attention span and grasping power (due to the diminished attentions span) of a 4th or 5th grader.
The visual element should always be clutter free and consistent. Remember Nike, and now think of Wal-Mart. Which logo appeared more distinct in your mind?
Color
Color is the second thing that your customers notice about your logo, or rather, it is the first thing noticed by your customers’ sub-conscious mind, so the color of your logo should elicit the response you want from your customers. You should carefully choose the colors that your logo will take in the course of its life. The decision about the color should be based on the psychological effect of a color and the customers’ emotional response to it. Do not just choose a color because you like it.

Font
Some fonts are formal while others are casual. Some are soft-edged while others are stiff-faced. Research suggests that a font affects the way we perceive the written text. Text written with a hard-edged font will have different effect than the text written using a round-edged font. You should pay particular care during font section for your logo.
Breathing space
There should be adequate amount of white space between each element of the logo. We call this breathing space. Leaving lots of white-space around each element makes the logo look clutter-free. The more breathing space a logo will have the better it will look.
A proper use of each of these elements in the logo designing process will help your logo stand out from the crowded shelf of retail.
